Agnes Jones is making lye soap in an old scalding pot at one of the of the Big Island Community's fall festivals.  Agnes was dearly loved by everyone.  Before she died, she shared her story with Eva Yoder: "Agnes was born before the Great Depression (possibly around 1915). Milam's store was a pop shop and a gathering place in the town. Local families, including the Douglas family, supplied fruits, eggs and vegetables to the store to be sold.

The old Big Island Hotel where teachers boarded and railroad men stayed over. An important facility during the Batteaux Days and throughout the heyday of the passenger trains. Many banquets, weddings and special school functions were celebrated at this hotel. It was built in the early to mid 1800s. Packet boats would stop here as well.
